Musical comedy duo to play for Decked Out '99
by Stuart Tart
Toledo Here's a little queer trivia for you... Can you name the gay singing duo--famous for their unique combination of music, humor, and politics--who has produced six musical comedy albums since 1982 with titles like I Thought You Be Taller, Trouble in Paradise, and most recently, Let's Flaunt It?
Here's a hint: They will be performing in Toledo on June 12. That's right! Romanovsky and Phillips will be the featured performers at Decked Out '99, Toledo's fourth annual shipboard dinner dance Pride event.
The event, sponsored by Gays and Lesbians United, will be held on Saturday, June 12, on the Willis B. Boyer museum ship, which is moored on the Maumee River in Toledo.
Boarding for dinner guests will begin at 5:45 pm with dinner being served at 6:30 pm.
Dance guests may embark at 8:00 pm Romanovsky and Phillips will be the featured entertainers, and there will be a dance,. which will run until midnight.
The event, which attracted almost 400 revelers in 1998, will be a celebration of the recent passage of a human rights ordinance in Toledo. The ordinance, passed after a yearlong campaign by Gays and Lesbians United and other community activists, is relatively unique in Ohio because it both includes discrimination protections for transgendered individuals and extends hate crimes protections to all groups covered by the city's civil rights laws.
"Our community's celebrations in June have always been about taking pride in who we are. However, I believe we should also celebrate our accomplishments. That is what this year's event will be about," explained Kurt Erichsen.

Seventh annual Cincinnati Womonfest set for June 12
Dry Ridge, Ky.-The Seventh Annual Cincinnati Womonfest will be held, rain or shine, on Saturday, June 12. The event will last from 11:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. at a secluded, women-owned farm known as Cedar Hill Ranch, in Dry Ridge, Kentucky, about 50 miles south of Cincinnati.
The location offers guests the opportunity to enjoy nature walks and guided hikes. In addition, several lakes and a swimming pool offer the opportunity for plenty of outdoor recreation. Fishing is allowed on the property, but participants must have a Kentucky fishing license.
More importantly, according to Mary Jennings, a long-time member of the Womonfest planning committee, “It is a way of bringing a community together.” Jennings said her biggest reward in her work with Womonfest has been "meeting new women who are reaching out to each other."
A plethora of entertainers are scheduled to perform at Womonfest, including Jamie Anderson, Rita Beach, Jamie Fota, Belinda Scroggin Justus, Lee Hoffman, Shelly Graf, Just the Band, Close Quarters, Tracy Walker and comedian Chaz. Kate Anthony will read poetry and Martha McLeon will do storytelling.
This year's event offers participants to attend workshops on a variety of diversified subjects. Topics for this year's workshops are Financial, Home Repair, Relationships, Womon's Health, Pet Care, Stress Management, Line Dancing and Humor.
Many retail vendor booths have been rented and will offer the opportunity to purchase jewelry, arts and crafts. Massage will be available at one booth, and Tarot readings are available at another. Food vendors will serve grilled foods and beverages. Booth space is still available.
Anyone interested in renting a vendor booth should contact Womonfest, P.O. Box 893, Covington, Ky. 41012 or Mary Jennings at 606-291-6973, or e-mail
womonfest@hotmail.com.
Tickets are $8 in advance, and $10 at the gate, on the day of the festival. Advance tickets can be purchased at Crazy Ladies Bookstore or by mail. Send a check or money order, along with a self-addressed, stamped envelope to Womonfest, P.O. Box 983, Covington, Ky. 41012.
Festival guests may wish to bring lawn chairs, blankets, bug spray, sunscreen, and a sleeping bag and tent, if you want to stay all night. No male children over the age of 12 will be allowed, and the festival is drug-free except for alcohol.
For more info, or to volunteer your help, please call Mary Jennings at 606-291-6973.
